ST JOHN'S RIDER

It is a huge bastion with a pentagonal plan located just west of the Great Gate, between Ordonance Street and Pope Pius V Street. It was part of the complex defensive system of the capital, having the function of housing the cannons protecting the city on the land side. It was one of the first buildings to be constructed in Valletta. At the top of the massive block, one can guess the gardens on the terraces at the top. It houses the embassy of the Sovereign, Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta.
