This place use to be great when it was owned by the original owner and chef about a year ago. Since being taken over by an out-of-towner, it has extremely went down in quality of food, inventiveness of the menu, and they are never open. As of this last week a sign hangs on the window (again)-- 'closed for maintenance' yet there is no maintenance being done.

Really very sad as this was one of the true gems in Dunsmuir.

We stumbled onto this fabulous restaurant! I was craving a Caesar salad, and this place was open. It’s a cozy upscale restaurant is a cute little town. I highly recommend it!

Delicious food, very good service. We had the pork belly and a New york steak, both were very juicy and the pork was crunchy on the outside. Will surely come here again when visiting the area.

They debited $124 instead of $110. Not a big deal, but worth writing a review.

Café Maddalena offered one of my favorite food experiences in North America. Everything tasted so delicate, and the portions were plentiful. Add to that the staff's friendliness, and you can't go wrong. The atmosphere is also perfect: the music is at the perfect volume where it fades into the background, and you are surrounded with people enjoying their dinner.

Why hasn't this place received a Michelin star — we dined here in July for dinner and were lucky enough to call last minute and get a table. Everything that came on the table was nothing short of excellent. The chef and the team here are doing a great job and we're grateful to them for our experience.

My family and I went there with much anticipation and left fairly disappointed. The food was good but not great. The service was horrible. It took about 1 hour after ordering to get our salads. We felt our presence was an annoyance. The waitress was unfriendly and not attentive. I will not go back. There are other places to eat.

Salad was al a carte and $17 for 10 pieces of wilted lettuce and a few fresh tomatos..on to the main course..homemade pasta with meat and tomato sauce..it was..meh..
under- welming. For almost $30..should have been spectacular. Our bill was $185.00 for 3 salads..4 bolugenes plates and 1 glass of wine..will never be back

My husband and I went there on Saturday for our anniversary. This was our second visit, but this particular visit was not as good as the first. To start, we had the tartine de jour, which was delicious, but for someone to share, there should have been an even number of pieces and not 3. The glass of prosecco was delicious. The beef tenderloin was season to perfection. The rest, I'm afraid, was seriously lacking. The thyme risotto had no flavor. The broccoli was cooked perfectly. My dish was the sablefish, bay rice, and carrots, all of which needed more salt/flavor. The rice was undercooked, and the burre Monte was good but needed salt. The fish was buttery/nice and flaky, but it was not seasoned and would have been better with crispy skin. The carrots were cooked but had a very strong char on them and again needed some sort of seasoning, even some salt would have been better. We had the blueberry angelfood cake for desert, which was delicious! I hope this gives some positive criticism considering we are locals and look forward to a nice place to eat. I look forward to more French inspired cuisine in the future. Also, please get ceiling fans. It was very hot inside and there was no ice in the water glasses.

Food is tasty, atmosphere outside more quiet than indoor.
Waited over 1 hr for food. Portions very small.

The menu was short, but everything was good. Our server was marginal at best. She made several mistakes through the meal and didn't really seem like she was having a very good time. Dunsmuir is a quaint town and the cafe is in a cute part.

Delicious dinner in Dunsmuir! First time in the town on our way to Bend and we stopped for dinner here. Got the house made fettuccine pasta Bolognese and I requested a vegetarian pasta and the chef made a Cacio e Pepe. It was very good! Not huge portions but filling enough, and the bread was delicious. Dessert and appetizer was great too.

Very friendly and attentive staff, willing to go out of their way for our group of 13 people. Food was excellent, though a bit pricey. Atmosphere was pleasant, clean, somewhat noisy when the restaurant is full.

What a shame and what a loss. This once great little restaurant is now just another ho-hum hole in the wall.

We have eaten in this restaurant dozens of times and have left positive reviews. But after recent shake-ups including the dismissal of the executive chef and most of the wait staff, we can no longer recommend Cafe Maddalena to anybody.

We understand staffing changes happen, and there are good reasons for it we are sure. But there is no excuse for accepting poor wait service and at best mediocre food. There's even less excuse for accepting snotty attitude from the owners

Whatever you do, do not offer suggestions or feedback about how things could be better here, or you will receive an angry, childish lecture from the owner at your table in front of all the other patrons, before your food arrives. It felt like a teenage breakup scene.

Like I said, what a shame and what a loss. Cafe Maddalena will be gone in a year, or under new ownership.

We have been dining at Cafe Maddalena regularly for over 5 years. We estimate about 100 times over those years and with an average ticket price of 100.00 (and that is probably low) that equates 2 approximately $10,000 we have spent there . We own vacation rentals in the area and always recommend our guests visit the restaurant, it was our very top choice. Recently, after the long-term owner sold, there were two other ownership changes. We were always very understanding and had no issues with those changes. Having owned businesses we understand it takes a little bit to get back on track. The last three times we visited, and spent quite a bit of money ( it's not cheap there) we noticed the continued lack of quality service which we had become a very accustomed to, and the food quality was very different. The amount of food had also diminished. We finally decided it was time to discuss this issue and complained to our waitress and then to management. We were treated with such disdain and rudeness that we have decided to eliminate Cafe Maddalena from our dining repertoire and not recommended to anyone else. It is very overpriced for the amount and the quality of food you receive, and the service is sorely lacking. They are way too impressed with themselves and they have lost their humility and perspective and the reason good people go into the restaurant business, in my opinion. Save your money, go have a good meal at the Railroad Park or head up to Mount Shasta. There are several options there that are much better. There's no such thing as hospitality at Cafe Maddalena. So sad.

After multiple recommendations, I drove an hour here to try this restaurant. It did not disappoint! The service was amazing, I sat outside and they moved me inside (At my request) partway through dining without any fuss at all. The meal was fantastic, I had the roasted cabbage appetizer which was good. The highlight for me was the beef tenderloin. I typically order filet, because I prefer leaner cuts of meat. This was amazing! It ordered medium, it was cooked perfectly. The Demi glaze is robust and a little salty which I love, (order on the side if that’s maybe not your thing). It was a large cut and I definitely didn’t need an appetizer, or dessert, but that didn’t stop me haha. I got the chocolate ganache torte, which paired perfectly with the Pinot noir. Would definitely come back, and would 100% order the beef tenderloin again. Thank you for such a great experience, and the fantastic service.

As a local, I’ve been going to Cafe Maddalena’s for decades now. More recently, the business was sold and from what I understand, the employees purchased it. I’ve gone twice since they’ve taken it on and can say with confidence that the quality, ambiance, and overall experience is still 10/10 amazing! I’m so proud of the employees for taking this on and continuing to honor the qualities that makes this restaurant shine. The wait staff is incredibly professional and charming and the chefs continue to put their heart and soul into each meal. Great job guys!!
