Specializing in the marine biodiversity of this rich region, Encounter Kaikoura offers the opportunity to swim with wild dolphins in the open sea, including the rare "dark dolphins. After watching an introductory video, a shuttle bus will take you to the boat, which will leave for the open sea in search of the many mammals still present in the area. All equipment is provided (wetsuit, fins, mask and snorkel) as well as a small snack. During this unique experience, several swims are planned.

Open daily from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. 220 per adult ($110 without swim) and $205 per child ($70 without swim).

Owner's Message

Ecounter Albatross was created in 1998 by the owners of dolphin encounter companies. This tour takes you by boat off the Kaikoura coast to visit the world's largest span and an incredible range of pelagic (living ocean) birds. Kaikoura is known as the albatross capital of New Zealand - if not the world, and up to twelve species of albatross can be found along this spectacular coastline.

These vast offshore canyons, with their nutrient-rich waters, are responsible for the variety of marine life off Kaikoura. A journey time of just fifteen minutes by boat is needed to start watching the pelagic birds, including twelve species of albatross, penguins, gannets, jaegers, shearwaters, petrels and terns.

Went to the Café every morning for 2 weeks, on my walk with Manuka, the labrador. The Café team was great, and coffee consistently good!

Great experience overall. Very nice staff and everything is super well organised! Amazing to see so many dolphins swimming at the same time.

If you are flexible on your dates I would recommend avoiding to take the tour after rainy days: there are some rivers in the area and if it’s been wet over the past few days the water might not be very clear and it can affect significantly the visibility under the water. And I guess also the playfulness of the dolphins, who won’t see much either!
