Remarkable palace featuring an equestrian statue sculpted in Italian bronze and offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
Opposite Harar's great mosque stands the former palace of Menelik II's cousin (now the Harar Tourist Board), Ras (Duke) Makonnen, better known as the father of Ras Tafari Haile Selassie. He was the first ruler of Harar after the city's occupation. In the center of the square, he is honored with an equestrian statue sculpted in bronze in a very Italian style. The palace is remarkable, and we recommend a visit upstairs for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city.
