MOSQUÉE JAMIA

Also known as the Great Mosque of Harar, the Jamia Mosque is one of the city's oldest Islamic religious buildings, considered a Muslim holy site due to the religion's long-standing presence here. Founded in 1216, the current building dates back to the ^16th century, when it was extensively remodeled and its current minaret was added during the reign of Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi (1528-1543). His tomb is located in the mosque's prayer hall. It was further enlarged in the ^19th century.
