Debre Markos used to be a stage town on the Bahar Dar-Addis-Abeba route, but the new asphalt road that branches off after Dejen towards Mota is now better and shorter. We recommend this route, as the town is of little interest. It takes its name from its church dedicated to Saint Mark, built in 1869. It was the capital of the negus of Godjam during his golden age in the 19th century, but the palace was remodeled in a European style by Ras Tekle-Haïmanot, after a trip to Europe with Emperor Haile Selassie in 1926. Fascinated by modernity, he equipped the city with telephone, telegraph and postal services ten years later.
