Addis Ababa has a population of around 4.5 million. Anarchic, it is built like a boomtown and suffers from traffic jams. For the traveler, the first contact with the Ethiopian capital depends on the season. In dry weather, the temperature is mild, the air invigorating and the sky a constant azure blue. In the rainy season, its soggy, muddy appearance is a little depressing. This climate is a reminder that it was between 2,300 and 2,500 m above sea level, on the Choa plateaux, that the "new flower" hatched in 1886. The headquarters of the African Union, Addis Ababa is a diplomatic, international and cosmopolitan capital, with plenty of reasonably-priced luxury hotels and a handful of top-class restaurants. Tourists don't usually linger here, visiting monuments and museums and enjoying the capital's nightlife before heading off to other regions.
