Yantarny, 50 km from Kaliningrad, is a small coastal town, whose name is simply derived from the Russian word yantar for amber. It is famous for its amber mines which can be visited and is a seaside town. The giant mermaid at the entrance to the town and the former PrussianKirche are the most striking monuments. Yantarny was Palmnicken in German times. During the Second World War, the Nazis massacred the survivors of the Stutthof camp here. This event has been highly commemorated ever since. Access to the locality remained restricted until 1991 because of its strategic location and mining activity
