Its long white sandy beaches on the Baltic Sea, dunes and pine forests - until recently Soviet military zones - are not the only attractions of the Curonian Spit coast. You can use Ventspils, Liepāja or Pāvilosta as a base for exploring the coastal region. A small coastal road with high cliffs connects Ventspils with Liepāja. You can stop at Pāvilosta, a small port at the mouth of the Saka River. Around the nearby Grini nature reserve you will find places to camp.Another possible stopover 55 km south-east of Ventspils: Lake Usma, surrounded by forests, and its seven islands, including that of Moricsala, declared a nature reserve in 1912. An ideal place for fishing or nautical activities.Numerous bed and breakfasts, with beautiful houses and restaurants with traditional cuisine, can be found in the area.
