Read moreBuilt away from the city for fear of the spread of yellow fever, it is the oldest in the city. The graves are raised because this part of New Orleans is below sea level. You will find there the supposed tomb of Marie Laveau, high priestess voodoo, buried there in 1881. His grave is easily recognizable. You will see many of the "X's" left behind by tourists in the past. It is because of this type of vandalism that it is now mandatory to visit the cemetery with a guide.
