The island has a quadrangular shape and is 3.4 km long and 2.7 km wide, i.e. about 5 km2. It is located 160 km from Porto Empedocle and the Sicilian coast, and 42 km from Lampedusa, further south. Its volcanic origin is obvious with the two craters of Monte Vulcano, the highest peak of the island which culminates at 195 m and that of Monte Rossa (186 m). Lava is present everywhere on the island. The population, mainly made up of fishermen, lives in the only inhabited centre of the island, also called Linosa, a pretty village with traditional houses located on the southern coast. The houses of Linosa are worth a visit. Square with flat roofs and above all very colourful (yellow, ochre, bright red or sky blue), they are sometimes rented by their owners during the whole summer period! Very few accommodations are proposed on this piece of land far from everything, a change of scenery all the more charming for those who come to lose themselves there
