Ngamba Island is located on Lake Victoria, 23 km southeast of Entebbe. With a surface area of 40 hectares, it is cut in two: 5% of the island is dedicated to the center's buildings and accommodations, the rest, 95%, separated by an electrified fence, has been home for more than twenty years to a sanctuary for about fifty chimpanzees introduced on the island after passing through the Entebbe zoo, most of them originating from the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is estimated that every year in Africa, 5,000 chimpanzees are killed by poachers for consumption. In addition, dozens of baby chimpanzees are captured alive and then sold as pets or to zoos. The Ngamba Island Orphanage is a project set up by several international conservation organizations (Born Free Foundation, Jane Goodall Institute...). It aims to offer orphaned chimpanzees a safe place, safe from hunters and under veterinary control, where they can live in peace after being socialized.
