MONUMENTO A CELIA SANCHEZ

A ceramic work pays tribute to Celia Sanchez (1920-1980) installed on the 137th step of a staircase overlooking a panorama of the city. A native of the region and initiator of the 26th of July movement in the province, she took part in the guerrilla warfare in the Sierra Maestra and became Fidel Castro's closest collaborator. A museum is also dedicated to her in the house where she was born in Media Luna, about 50 km south of Manzanillo. The sculpture represents the bust of the woman decorated with a dove (peace) and a sunflower (light).
