The artificial lake Hanabanilla is the result of the construction of a dam in 1961, which provides drinking water for the cities of Cienfuegos and Santa Clara. A small hydroelectric plant also provides the surrounding area with electricity. The lake is full of trout. Some say that Fidel Castro used to come and rest in one of the houses on the lake, which has now disappeared. Historically, the area was also the site of skirmishes between the counter-revolutionaries and the FAR (Revolutionary Armed Forces) in the 1960s.
