THE SUBSTATION
Housed in a renovated 1920s building, this contemporary art center showcases the city-state's many talents.
Built in 1926 as a power station, the Armenian Street building was transformed in 1990 by playwright Kuo Pao Kun into Singapore's first independent contemporary arts center. For three decades, this venue served as an avant-garde laboratory, revealing many young artists and offering exhibitions, concerts and experimental performances. The building closed in 2021, but The Substation continues its role as an artistic platform in a different form, without a fixed location. Check the website for the latest information.
