CHINATOWN HERITAGE CENTRE
Renovated in 2025, the Chinatown Heritage Centre is one of the most moving places to discover the daily life of Singapore's first Chinese immigrants. Housed in three magnificent shophouses on Pagoda Street, this 3-level museum plunges you into the intimacy of modest families in the 1950s, through a highly accurate reconstruction. You move from room to room: cramped kitchen, rudimentary bathroom, shared bedrooms... all faithfully recreated with period objects, hanging linen and furniture worn to the point of apparent disorder, reinforcing the illusion of a place still inhabited.
Poignant audio testimonies, period documents, authentic objects and an immersive scenography provide a better understanding of the social, economic and cultural issues of the time. You really need to take the time to read everything, to observe everything, to stop and consider the personal accounts that are slipped in here and there. You'll discover the hopes, the struggles, the solidarity, the traditions handed down and the courage of a whole section of the Chinese population, often arriving with very little, but full of willpower. Every nook and cranny tells a story.
QR codes punctuate the tour, allowing visitors to explore the content in greater depth. A rich, moving experience, to be enjoyed without hurry: allow 1h30 to 2h to fully appreciate it. To round off this moving visit, there's nothing like a peaceful, refined break in the museum's tearoom.
