MERLION
A true Singapore icon, the half-lion, half-fish statue that spits water into the bay attracts tourists from all over the world. But what's so special about it? A little like the Manneken Pis in Brussels, the Merlion is the symbol of the city, endlessly reproduced in souvenir stores. Created in 1964 as the logo for the tourist office, this mythical creature recalls the legend of Sang Nila Utama, prince of Palembang, who is said to have spotted a lion on the shores of what is now the city-state. A giant replica also dominates Sentosa Island.
