MASJID SULTAN (MOSQUE)
Singapore's most impressive mosque, inviting you to discover the Kampong Glam district.
In Kampong Glam, it's impossible to miss the majestic Sultan Mosque, with its golden dome and four minarets topped by octagonal platforms. This is Singapore's most emblematic mosque. Construction began in 1824, financed by a donation from Sultan Hussein Shah of Johor and the British East India Company. It was completed two years later.
A century later, the building threatened to collapse and was completely rebuilt in 1928. The gilded dome, added at this time, rests on a base made from the bottoms of glass bottles - a tribute to the more modest worshippers who contributed to its construction.
Even today, the Sultan Mosque remains one of Singapore's largest, with a prayer hall that can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers. The liveliest time to discover it is on Fridays after the main prayer. The men fold up their red carpets on the marble floor, while the women, at the back, gradually leave their space.
Proper attire is required: no shorts for men, covered arms and legs for women (clothes can be lent). Always ask permission before taking photos, and don't hesitate to chat with the people present, who are often delighted to share their knowledge.
Ramadan is an ideal time to visit. As night falls, Muslims come to break their fast in a unique atmosphere. Around the mosque, numerous stalls offer excellent cuisine in a convivial atmosphere.
