Built in 1827 by the Chulias, the first Tamil immigrants to settle near the river, this mosque is one of the oldest in Singapore. Initially a simple palm-roofed hut, it became an official building in 1855. Its South Indian architecture is distinguished by two minarets on the façade. Nicknamed Kuchu Pali ("mosque-refuge" in Tamil), it can accommodate 500 worshippers and today remains a peaceful place, classified as a national monument since 1974. Inside, the sober, luminous prayer room contrasts with the bustle outside.
