The park's 8,996 hectares are home to miles of golden sandy beaches bordered by virgin forest. Three types of vegetation coexist: the coastal fringe, the kerangas (heather forest) and a large mixed forest. There are 24 mammal species, including the gibbon, striped langur and muntjac; 185 bird species, including the hornbill and crested eagle; and two types of crocodile. Although no attacks have ever been reported in the park, be on the lookout. The keenest eyes may catch a glimpse of dolphins and porpoises, and the luckiest may spot green turtles laying eggs on Golden Beach and Turtle Beach. To maximize your chances of spotting animals, it's best to get there early and hire a boat to take you up the Sungai Likau and familiarize yourself with its mangroves. While the park is very pleasant during the week, it quickly becomes crowded at weekends.
