THE ASTANA
Across the river on the north shore is the unmistakable Astana (palace) erected in 1870 by the second white Rajah as a wedding gift to his wife Margaret. The couple occupied the palace, which remains the official residence of the Governor of Sarawak to this day. The name Astana is spread in large white letters on the immaculate green lawn in the style of the Hollywood sign. As the palace cannot be visited, we advise you to simply admire the view without making the crossing. You can also cross the garden from the bridge.
