FORT ANDRES
At its southern end, Frederick Street leads to the port area and Fort San Andres, a wooden fort covered with ochre earth, built by the Spanish in 1787. It is the last fortified structure still standing from the period of Spanish colonization of Trinidad, which ended in 1797 when the island was conquered by the British. Open to the public intermittently, it houses some temporary exhibitions from time to time. Just before reaching the harbor, Frederick Street cuts across the double lane of Independence Square and the Brian Lara Promenade.
