IGLESIA DE SAN ATANASIO

Next to Parque Bolívar, in the town center, this Mudejar-style colonial church was founded in 1569 by Bishop Francisco de Ábrego. It is considered the first church on the Azuero peninsula and was declared a national monument in 1938. Its white walls highlight the richness of the altarpiece of the Immaculate Conception (1721) with its gold, red and blue ornamentation. Look up to admire the elaborate woodwork on the ceiling. Every year, the church is at the center of the Corpus Christi festivities.
