The bay of Guaymas was discovered in the 16th century. It was not until 1701 that the Jesuit fathers Eusebio Kino and Juan Salvatierra founded a first mission there with the aim of evangelizing and sedentarizing the natives of the continental coast of the Sea of Cortes: Seri, Guayma and Yaqui. Faced with their fierce resistance, the Crown launched a military expedition in 1767 to subdue them. Declared a city in 1769, Guaymas is today the most important port of Sonora, which offers a ferry passage to Santa Rosalia, in Baja California. Guaymas has several bays, including Bacochibampo, the most pleasant for visitors.
