This would have been the sixth bastion to be built to arm the city with its defense system against invaders
Founded in 1702, it would have been the sixth bastion to have been built to arm the city with its defence system against invaders. Legend has it that it was the seat of the Inquisition. At the entrance you can see the Vatican coat of arms, the keys of St. Peter's surmounted by the papal tiara. What is certain is that it served as a refuge for the city's troops during the battles of 1824 against the central power of Merida. Until 2017, it was home to a beautiful Museum of Folk Art dedicated to the know-how of local craftsmen.
