It is as much a natural park that is visited for its ecosystems (in winter, more than 200 species of migratory birds visit the park) as it is an archaeological site whose first period of occupation extends from 500 BC to around 650 AD. The ethnic origin of the city's founders is uncertain, but it may have been a collaboration between Zoque groups from Chiapas and Zapotecs from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
