The Cárcamo del Río Lerma is decorated with a magnificent fresco of the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, called The Water
The Cárcamo del Río Lerma (or Cárcamo de Dolores) was once used to store the water that came from the Lerma River before distributing it to Mexico City's three million inhabitants. This curiosity is currently located in the Museo de Historia Natural, of which it is a part. This piece of hydraulic engineering (1942-1951) has the particularity of being decorated with a magnificent fresco by the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, called Water, the Origin of Life.
The work was designed to be seen through the transparency of water and touches on science, architecture, urbanism, engineering, plastic and sculpture. On the floor are represented the microscopic animals at the origin of life on earth. The further you go up the walls, the more the animals from marine life grow. Then two humans, a man of African origin facing a woman of Asian type. Outside, facing the Cárcamo building, is another work by Diego Rivera, a fountain representing the rain god Tláloc. Made of coloured mosaics, it was designed to be seen from the sky, like the Nazca lines in Peru. The renovation and reopening of the complex in 2010 was the occasion to add a sound installation(Cámara Lambdoma by Mexican artist Ariel Guzik). This device transforms and decomposes the inaudible frequencies(white noise) of the course of water, wind and sun. A must-see during a visit to the Bosque de Chapultepec.Advertising
