This sculpture of the th century was made in France by Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier. It was the Emperor Maximilian of Habsburgs who had the first idea to install a sculpture of Christopher Columbus in Mexico City, to pay tribute to the navigator who discovered America, but his too short stay in power prevented him from completing this project. A few years later, Mexican tycoon Antonio Escandón relanca this idea, commanded a sculpture in Cordier and offered it to the city.
