Surrealist house with European carpets, paintings... and a large collection of furniture from the 15th to the 20th century
The history of this house is surreal, as is the history of the entire country. The Virreinal-style property dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, when it functioned as an agricultural finca. It passed through the hands of 18 owners before being purchased in 1942 by Don Antonio Haghenbeck (1902 - 1991), in small denominations according to the legend. An exceptional and wise collector, he decided to remodel and redecorate the house by buying back elements of decoration, works and art objects from other houses that were being demolished (which earned the house the nickname of "house made from other houses"), bringing back others from his travels, in order to give it the Frenchified and eclectic style of the mansions of the second half of the 19th century. The result is breathtaking and here we visit the house as he lived it until his death. As you wander through 13 rooms, you will discover European carpets, porcelain, clocks, paintings and a large collection of furniture from the 15th to the 20th century, old books, Murano crystal chandeliers, hunting trophies and other precious objects and rarities. The history of this house is also that of María Nájera Ortiz, who during her childhood accompanied her parents, servants, during their work in the house of Don Antonio. To her surprise, the master's will gave her the right to continue living and looking after the house and its objects until her death; she herself is present in the museum on visiting days and has become its living memory.
