Away from the rest of the world, the modest gold-mining town of Guanay is very pleasant. It has a tropical atmosphere in what remains of the gold rush of the 1980s, a decade in which the town was won over by the gold fever that abounded in the area. The exiled president, Goni Sánchez de Lozada, made his fortune here, in the Kaka River that runs alongside the town. On the other side of the tiny port, you can still see the ruins of the dredger that "Goni" had imported from the United States and which became the most profitable in the world for a few years. The rest is known, his fortune served his political ambition.
