CHURCH OF SAINT THERESA OF THE CHILD JESUS
St. Theresa Church, cited as one of the most beautiful churches in Martinique, bears the same name as the neighbourhood. It lies below the cedar Pichevin dominating Sainte Thérèse and Volga Beach. The place-dit Morne-Pichevin was first named Morne-des-Capuchin. It is known more under the name of Hauts-du-Port. From the basilica, you contemplate, the harbour and sunsets. In 1925, under Victor Harsh, the municipality acquired the Faubourg de Terre-Sainville. It is clean and open to construction. Consequence: a demographic surge to the periphery of the Port. Quickly, people seek a place of worship: The basilica is built between 1930 and 1937. According to Abbot Louis Yon, the parish parish Sainte-Thérèse-de-Lisieux is one of the top ten in the world to have been dedicated to this holy 23 year old: his canonization dates back to 1925, three years before the church was built on the heights of Fort-de-France. But why this choice thousands of miles from Lisieux? In 1927, Saint Thérèse declared universal patronne of missions: In Martinique, however, the order of the Spiritains is mainly Missionary. This is probably the origin of the choice made in 1928.
