JEAN-MARTIAL HOSPITAL

At the end of the square, by the sea, it is unfortunately in a sad state of disrepair. In 1789, on this very site, the first wooden military hospital was built. It took twelve years to build a permanent structure, starting in 1824. In 1946, the building was named Jean-Martial, in honor of a Cayenne colonel physician who had died a year earlier in Djibouti fighting typhus. Declared a historic monument in 1992, the building is currently undergoing major renovation to become the Maison des Cultures et des Mémoires de la Guyane.
