FORT DU MONT
A fort built between 1877 and 1881, perched at an altitude of 1,130 meters to defend the Tarentaise valley and to protect itself.
Perched at an altitude of 1,130 m, Fort du Mont was built between 1877 and 1881 on the western slopes of La Roche Pourrie (2,037 m) to defend the Tarentaise valley and to open up the Beaufortain. Like many border fortifications in Savoy, it was a question of protecting against possible invasions from Italy. This Fort was only a deterrent. It has never had the opportunity to fight a single battle and even becomes obsolete as soon as it is completed. But it would later have other more peaceful uses... first by welcoming children to summer camps, then as a site for maturing Beaufort cheeses. And that's just a sample of what the Fort may have to say. The guided tour is worth a visit.
