Petit Futé's opinion on VAL CASTLE
The building we see today was built in the 15th century on the foundations of the 13th century fortress which dominated the Dordogne. Since the construction of the dam in 1951, the castle is located on a peninsula, evoking a certain similarity with the lands of Scotland. Val consists of a main building flanked by six towers topped by a pepperpot. The tympanum of the entrance door is decorated with a bas-relief representing the arms of the Estaing family. In the film Le Capitan,Jean Marais climbs one of the towers. The castle is illuminated on summer evenings.
