The starry sky of Provence is, according to specialists, the purest in Europe! For a long time its reputation has gone beyond our borders and this is probably the origin of this establishment. The Haute-Provence Observatory is a multidisciplinary scientific research and observation site founded in 1937. It is part of the Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers Institut Pythéas, and is attached to the CNRS, to Aix-Marseille University, and to the IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement).
In astronomy, the Observatory is recognized for its excellence in the search for exoplanets, the first of which was discovered in 1995 with the 1.93 m diameter telescope and the Elodie spectrograph. In the field of ecology, the evolution of biodiversity in the face of climate change is studied thanks to an observatory of the pubescent oak forest. The observatory has also been a world pioneer in the study of the ozone layer, and is therefore equipped with an observation station in atmospheric physics belonging to an important international network. The ICOS Tower is used to measure the impact of greenhouse gases on the climate. All year long, students of higher education, schoolchildren but also the general public are welcomed at the Observatory, which makes it a point of honor to train and share its knowledge.
