Museum presenting a wide range of regional heritage and housing Flemish and Italian Renaissance paintings
Located in the heart of the city, in a former 16th-century hospice, this museum, renovated in 2003, is like a cabinet of curiosities. With its remarkable diversity, it presents five centuries of art, history and science, and boasts a wealth of naturalistic and artistic collections. It also gives pride of place to contemporary artists from near and far, who are often inspired by the local environment to create bridges in situ. The museum is organized into four main areas: the 19th century, the ancient art collection, the science rooms and contemporary art. The Landscapes room is particularly interesting, featuring 19th-century Provencal paintings and an earth wall built by a major land art artist, the Englishman Andy Goldsworthy. Occasional events and temporary exhibitions are held here on a regular basis. The ultimate feature of this unique museum is its collaboration with CAIRN, the Centre d'art informel de recherche sur la nature, which covers an area of over 200,000 ha. You'll be able to admire permanent works of art installed in the heart of the Haute-Provence geopark. An opportunity to reconcile art and rurality, or art and nature. This walking tour will take you along sometimes forgotten mountain paths to reach the artworks, where you can stop for a while or even spend the night, notably in Andy Goldsworthy's refuges d'Art.
