In 1388, Colmars was a border town between Allos and Barcelonnette that formed an alliance with the Duchy of Savoy. The city was fortified in 1391 by a first medieval enclosure, whose square towers, equipped with crossbow loopholes, can be seen. Later, under Francis I, the defensive system was improved - barbican and machicolation. The enclosure will undergo some transformations with the construction of the bastioned towers.
