In the Vonne valley, the Gallo-Roman site of Sanxay, occupied from the 1st to the 4th century, was an important agglomeration of the ancient Picton territory, whose prestige is revealed by the remains discovered by Father Camille de La Croix from 1881 to 1883: an important thermal complex, a 6,000 m² sanctuary and a theatre that could hold up to 6,500 spectators. In August, don't miss the incredible Soirées Lyriques organised in the ruins of the Gallo-Roman theatre!

Information on GALLO-ROMAN SITE OF SANXAY

From May 15 to September 15, every day from 10 am to 6 pm. From September 16 to May 14, Wednesday to Sunday, from 10am to 12:30pm and from 1:30pm to 5pm. Closed the first two weeks of January, January 1, May 1, November 1, November 11 and December 25. Free of charge until 18 years old (free of charge for jobseekers and 18-25 residents of the European Union). Adults: 6 €. Guided tour. Free visit of the site with visit document.

Une belle promenade aménagée permet de découvrir les trois éléments qui ont survécu de ce lieu de cure et de pèlerinage important entre les 1er et 4e siècles. Les archéologues estiment que ce “vicus” (bourg rural) s’étend sur plus de 20 hectares. Sa situation aux frontières de régions d’économies complémentaires sert potentiellement de lieu d'échanges.
Sont présentement mis au jour: (1) un théâtre pouvant accueillir environ 6600 spectateurs (2) un vaste sanctuaire et (3) un complexe thermal. Les vestiges de nombreuses autres constructions ont été fouillés puis réenfouis.
