In the clay-limestone soils of the Haut-Poitou, the Rolls Royce of melons is 150 years old, and the Poitou-Charentes region alone produces a quarter of the national output. The Haut-Poitou melon was the first melon certified in France in 1996. A plot is grown every 5 years, only in the open air, in an area bounded to the south by the Auxances valley, to the north by the Loire and to the west by the Clain and Vienne valleys. 13 demanding farmers share the cultivation of this delicacy.
