NIDECK CASTLES
Ruins of 2 castles, the upper one with a moat, the lower one with a dungeon, memorial plaque of the poet Von Chamisso on the spot
The complex of ruins comprises two separate castles rising to a height of 534 metres. The upper one features a moat and an attacking shield wall. The other features a square keep protecting a narrow dwelling. The former dates from the mid-13th century, while the latter appears to date from the early 14th century. In 1636, a fire destroyed the buildings, which seem to have been neglected ever since. A commemorative plaque celebrates the Romantic poet Von Chamisso, who magnified the legend of the Nideck giants in Das Riesenspielzeug, translated as The Giant's Daughter.
