A memorial featuring a sculpture of a soldier carrying his comrade who died on the battlefield, created by James Butler.
James Butler has created a brilliant, evocative sculpture. It shows a soldier carrying his comrade who died on the battlefield. The powerful bond between men and war is palpable. The viewer is moved. The spiritual inspiration felt by the artist is palpable, as the standing soldier is transformed into an angel of mercy. The sculpture is a reminder that Fère-en-Tardenois and the surrounding area were severely tested during the First World War. The work is also a tribute to the 42nd Division, nicknamed the Rainbow Division, of the 167th Alabama Infantry Regiment, which served here.
