CASTLE-MUSEUM OF NOIRMOUTIER
Medieval castle-museum, one of the best preserved in the West, the museum in the dungeon offers a permanent exhibition
The château sits at the heart of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île. A veritable landmark, the Château de Noirmoutier is a strong anchor in the Noirmoutier landscape. Built at the end of the 12th century by Pierre V, Seigneur de La Garnache, this medieval castle is one of the best preserved in western France. Around 1690, Josse Hertsfelt, governor of the island, had the governor's lodgings built and opened the present entrance, facing the port. In the 18th century, the château was used to store military equipment, then became a military fortress until 1895, when it was demilitarized. Inside, you can see the armchair in which General d'Elbée was assassinated in January 1794, during the Vendée War. Located in the dungeon, the museum evokes the island's history with a permanent exhibition on the various prehistoric archaeological sites and the castle's evolution from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. A new exhibition is added every year. Guided tours (in French and English) are offered in July and August. During school vacations (except summer holidays), children's workshops are available on reservation. The Château de Noirmoutier is a listed historic monument, and its museum has been awarded the Musée de France label. The visit also includes a climb to the top of the keep, from where the view extends over the rooftops, the salt marshes and the ocean in the distance. As guardian of the island, it embodies the memory and pride of Noirmoutier.

Magnifique vue à 360 ° du haut de la tour.
Dommage qu'en août des gradins métalliques pour un festival défigurent la cour d'entrée.
