A must-see natural spot popular with fishermen, it links the island of Noirmoutier to the mainland via Beauvoir-sur-Mer.
The Gois is a natural place not to be missed on the Vendée coast. This astonishing road, underwater at times, connects the island of Noirmoutier to the mainland at low tide only, through the commune of Beauvoir-sur-Mer. The higher commission of the sites, prospects and landscapes returned a favorable opinion for the classification of the unit formed by the passage of Gois, the island of Croisnière and the polder of Sébastopol under the title of the sites of national interest. The connection of the Gois is possible at each tide, i.e. twice a day, during approximately 4 hours. This ford is 4.150 kilometres long and relatively dangerous, so it is strongly recommended that you check the tide times. The first crossing dates back to 843. The current route dates back to the end of the 18th century. It is also a very popular place for fishermen on foot. Six refuge beacons, at the top of which is a platform, run along the Gois and welcome travellers who have been surprised by the rising water. Although frequented by thousands of cars every summer, it remains an extraordinary and unique site in the world! Don't miss the famous event "Les Foulées du Gois". A few words of advice for the passage of the Gois: only cross this passage at low tide (crossing is possible 1h30 before and 1h30 after low tide) and above all scrupulously respect the signs and safety instructions posted around this site.
