TOBACCO MANUFACTURING
The Manufacture des Tabacs has become a lively, intergenerational district
It opened its doors in 1864, only to close them again almost a century later, in 1974. The Manufacture des Tabacs was one of the first industrial sites to be rehabilitated in France, and has now become a lively, intergenerational district, including a crèche, a youth hostel, a home for the elderly, social housing and a media library. Located near the Jardin des Plantes and the railway station, this factory was once dedicated to the production of cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos and fine-cut tobacco (scaferlati). A major economic hub for the city, it employed 1,700 workers in 1878, the vast majority of whom were women (9 out of 10!). Renovation work was brilliantly carried out by architects Georges Evano and Sylvie Jullien, and represented a considerable undertaking, with 8 teams of architects and 150 contractors working to breathe new life into this historic site that left its mark on the history of Nantes. Some of the key elements of this industrial site can still be seen, such as a boiler in the media library, the structures of the roasting ovens and the chimney dating from 1947.
