Prehistoric caves where you can admire the 200 hands painted on its walls, the hands with missing phalanges arouse curiosity

The decorated caves of Gargas are the only prehistoric caves in the Hautes-Pyrénées accessible to the public. The most spectacular and moving part of the visit is the large wall of hands which includes more than 137 paintings of prints. No one knows why the vast majority of these hands have missing phalanges. Elements of the answer are brought to the digital interpretation center Nestploria. An educational and moving place.

Opening time and information on PREHISTORIC CAVES OF GARGAS AND NESTPLORIA

Open all year round, weekly closing on Mondays (except from May to August). Centre nesploria open on public holidays except 25 December and 1 January. Low season: open from Tuesday to Sunday and on public holidays from 10:30 to 17:30. High season: every day and on public holidays from 10am to 6pm. Opening hours of the caves of Gargas: in high season, every half hour. Off season at 11 am, 3 pm and 4:30 pm. 24 people per visit, prior reservation by phone is required at 05 62 98 81 50. Adults: 12,50 €. Children (from 6 to 16 years old): 7,50 €. Group (10 people): 10 €. Family pass, 2 adults and 2 children: 33 €. Admission to Nestploria: 8 €/adult, 5 €/child. The Nestploria Interpretation Centre is accessible to people with disabilities. A collaborative video game "The buffalo tribe" and little mops, walks around the cave with a GPS. Visit of the caves: 50 minutes, same for the other activities.

Visitée en décembre dans une ambiance très bon enfant, avec un excellent guide, très agréable et sachant à la fois transmettre sa passion pour le site et se mettre à la portée de tous.
L'espace d'interprétation est conçu plutôt à l'anglo-saxonne, avec des espaces ateliers et un espace doté de bornes numériques et vidéos.
Une très belle découverte à recommander chaudement.
