Lourdes avant 1858 – Promenade culturelle à pied
Although Lourdes has been a major pilgrimage destination for Catholics since 1858, the town's history goes back much further. In fact, its territory has been occupied since prehistoric times! This historical tour takes you back to medieval times and the town of Lorda. It starts at Place Peyramale, in the heart of the historic town, and from the vestiges that are still very much alive to those that have disappeared, you'll find the town that was surrounded by two lines of fortifications and twelve towers. Along the three-kilometre walk, you'll discover some of the town's rich architectural heritage, including the fortified castle where the Counts of Bigorre lived in the 11th century, and the Garnavie tower.
