Maison Gélas is one of the leading names in Bas-Armagnac. A guided tour takes you through the winery, founded in 1865 by Baptiste Gélas. You'll discover the still room where the eaux-de-vie are distilled, as well as the various trades involved in armagnac production: bouilleur de cru, cellar master, cooper... The adjoining cellar-boutique houses over 800 references of armagnacs, flocs de Gascogne, plum brandies and liqueurs. The house has also developed recipes for Armagnac vinegar and mustard.

We bought some boxes of wine from them yesterday and realised, when we got home, that they had omitted to take payment for one of the boxes. We returned today to pay for the wine. We explained that we owed them for a box of wine, the guy behind the counter went through the receipt, eventually realised the mistake they had made, rang up what we owed and before he had even given us our receipt, was on to serving the next person behind us. No acknowledgement of our honesty, no thank you, not even a smile or a bon journée - makes you wonder whether it was worth it. The 1 star is for customer service on this occasion!
