A fascinating tourist site where a visit to a beautifully restored building will help you discover the riches of the Garonne River.
The "Maison de Garonne" site was opened in June 2023 by Boé town council "to raise awareness of the rich history and diversity of the Garonne's environments and landscapes", explains a sign at the entrance to this gracefully restored former 14th-century watchtower.
The 1-hour tour begins on the first floor. Screens show videos on a variety of subjects: the great shad (a fish from the Garonne), Agen philosopher Michel Serres, the Occitan language. A sound and light room presents the river. The center of the room is occupied by a reproduction of a boat used, among other things, for fishing.
On the 1st floor, a scenography retraces the tower's past and local history. It deals with the flooding and dredging of the Garonne. A piece of furniture lets you slide your hand inside to touch the gravel, pebbles and sand extracted from the river.
The 2nd floor is devoted to the fauna, flora and legends surrounding the Garonne. An aerial view of Agen and the surrounding area covers the entire floor. The effect is simply brilliant. Young and old alike can enjoy spotting Jean-Plantou, the tower's mascot, hidden in several places.
The 3rd and top floor features a panoramic terrace. A view of the Garonne River awaits you.
Activities related to nature, culture and history are organized throughout the year. A hiking trail takes you further into this remarkable area, close to the Passeligne and Pélissier lakes.
