Castle dominating the valley and which belonged to the Kings of Aragon, the old stables welcome the house of the Donezan heritage

Dominating the Aude valley at 925 m, the castle is mentioned for the first time in 1035. It was partly built during the Cathar period. It was owned by the Kings of Aragon, under the management of Gaston Phoebus, and then returned to the French crown. It was the rear base of the Cathars, and history says that 4 of them and their treasure passed through it on the eve of the surrender of Montségur. The old stables of the 18th century are now home to the house of the Donezan heritage and its 700 m2 of exhibition space. The view from the spur tower is breathtaking.

C'est une visite qui se merite car montee un peu rude d'un quart d'heure avant d'arriver au chateau! Nous Avons fait la visite avec le guide du chateau qui a tres bien su le mettre en valeur car C'est un chateau en ruine. Le guide nous a fait une petite entree en matiere en nous retracant l'histoire du donezan et du chateau d'hier a aujourd'hui. On trouve egalement sur place la maison du patrimoine avec la reconstitución sur deux etages d'une maison ariegeoise du debut du siecle, une expo permanente sur les de ouverte prehistoriques de la zone ainsi qu'un pan de mur conSacrer aux soldads de la 1ere et 2nd guerre mundiale de la region.
Je vous conseille la visite guidée pour donner du sens a votre visite.
