MONEY HOTEL
A rare flamboyant Gothic-style hotel dating back to the Middle Ages and listed as a historic monument.
Located in the heart of Vic-sur-Seille, the Hôtel de la Monnaie is one of the town's few remaining medieval buildings. Built in 1456, this highly-worked, flamboyant Gothic structure features the first architectural elements of the Renaissance, with lattice windows and projecting moldings. It was following a conflict between the town's burghers in 1234 that the Bishop of Metz, Jean d'Apremont, and his successors chose to settle in Vic. The presence of salt, the white gold of the local subsoil, represented a significant source of wealth. They reigned here until 1648 (Treaty of Westphalia), when the French crown assumed sovereignty over the three bishoprics. In 1905, it was listed as a Monument Historique by the German authorities during the French annexation. On April 26, 1910, Kaiser Wilhelm II himself inaugurated the local history museum housed within it. In 1930, the facades and roof were listed as historic monuments. Inside, don't miss a stunning fresco, over 100 years old, or this magnificent Madonna and Child! The Hôtel de la Monnaie was completely restored in 2002 and 2003. It houses the Vic-sur-Seille tourist office. It is also the headquarters of the Musée Georges de La Tour. Information on the history of the site and good addresses in the vicinity will be provided. The building also features an adjoining exhibition room showcasing works by local artists!
